Congratulations! You are pregnant. A beautiful time which can also be overwhelming.
On this page we gathered practical information for you.
This way, you can prepare well for everything to come.

Intake form

Are you visiting our practice for the first time? Then please fill out our intake form before this first visit.

Have you had a positive pregnancy test and haven’t registered with us yet? You can easily do so online – a referral from your GP is not necessary!

Healthy pregnancy

“As long as it’s healthy,” is often your answer to the question of whether you want a boy or a girl. For all expectant parents, this is the absolute number one priority. You want your child to have the healthiest possible start. And you can do a lot yourself to increase the chances of a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby.

On the following websites, you will find many tips and information for a healthy pregnancy:

Prenatal screening

By far the majority of babies are born healthy. However, about 3-4% of babies have a congenital defect, ranging from something small and harmless to major abnormalities.

You can find more information about this and available tests on the Pre- and Neonatal Screenings (PNS) website.

Pregnancy checkups

Centering Pregnancy

During your pregnancy, we offer you regular check-ups. We use the following schedule:

Week 9 –  17 – 25 – 30 – 33 – 36 – 38 – 40 en 41

You can choose to have your check-ups according to the schedule above, or you can opt for more comprehensive care in the form of CenteringPregnancy (there are no additional costs involved!). This consists of 8–9 two-hour sessions during pregnancy and one session after the birth with your baby. During these sessions, a physical examination will be carried out. Afterwards, you will join other women who are at approximately the same stage of pregnancy as you, under the guidance of a midwife and co-host, to discuss topics that are relevant to you. At least one of these sessions will include your partners and will focus extensively on childbirth.

You are welcome from Monday to Wednesday at our beautiful location at Herenstraat 7 in Leiden. On Friday, we welcome you at Medisch Centrum Roomburg in Leiden.

Blood test

At the first check-up, we will refer you to the Poort (ATAL) or the SCAL laboratory to have blood drawn.

You can find what is being checked on on this page of the PNS website.

It is important to know that you will only be called with the result if it is abnormal. So: no news is good news!

Ultrasound examination

Midwifery practice De Kern refers you to ultrasound center De Poort in Leiden for ultrasounds. This is a very experienced ultrasound center.

If necessary, they will refer you to the hospital for specialist care, in consultation with us.

Infectious diseases and pregnancy

An infectious disease is caused by a bacterium, a virus, or a fungus. These enter your body through your skin or mucous membranes and can make you sick.

Read more about infectious diseases and their prevention in the RIVM brochure.

Education

We believe it is important that you, as a pregnant woman, have easy access to reliable and expert information, regardless of who is providing your care. Therefore, information is offered in our region that is the same for all pregnant women and their partners through the Geboortemail.

Whooping cough vaccination

It is possible to get vaccinated against whooping cough during your pregnancy; this is to protect the baby against whooping cough from birth.

It is up to each individual to choose whether or not to get vaccinated. For more information, visit the website of the National Vaccination Program.

We are participating in the Pregnancy Project!

Would you like to see a familiar face at check-ups and appointments throughout your entire pregnancy? Do you want to offer a future doctor a unique and educational experience?

Then join the Pregnancy Project! In this project, a medical student is paired with a pregnant woman. This allows you to go through the educational pregnancy journey together. During the project, the student will attend as many appointments as possible; this is, of course, always in consultation with you as the pregnant woman. If you wish, the student will also be present at your delivery. Both students and pregnant women who have already participated in the project speak very highly of this initiative.

The Pregnancy Project is an initiative in collaboration with IFMSA-Leiden, an (inter)national organization of medical students.

Birth email

In this region, midwives, gynecologists, and maternity nurses work closely together to offer all pregnant women optimal care.

A ‘Basic Pregnancy Care Pathway’ has been developed, specifically for all pregnant women with a high chance of a healthy pregnancy.

Part of this care is the birth email. You can sign up for this, which means that starting at 10 weeks of pregnancy, you will receive a weekly email with information about the upcoming week of pregnancy. This includes what to expect in terms of symptoms, as well as the baby’s development during that week. Furthermore, practical information is also provided, such as arranging for legal recognition.

You can register via the website of Geboortezorg Leiden en omstreken.

Birth email is not commercial, so they do not contain any advertisements!
